Vikings punter Chris Kluwe isn?t gay.? But if he were, we suspect he?d gladly announce it.

He?d do it because, in his mind, people are people and they should be who they are, and the rest of us should accept it.? But there would be a collateral benefit, in Kluwe?s opinion.

?The first gay athlete to come out will have endorsement deals the likes of which you?ve never seen,? Kluwe told Bob Costas on Tuesday?s Costas Tonight on NBC Sports Network.? ?Think about Gatorade, think about Nike, think about those huge companies that want to stamp their brand, their logo on this generation?s Jackie Robinson.? You?re telling me that?s not the biggest marketing opportunity in 50 years?? I mean, it?s huge.?

Kluwe, who recently debated a chair on the topic of same-sex marriage, thinks the NFL is much closer to being ready to accept a gay player than it was when he arrived.? ?When I first got in the league, you could definitely tell the older guys, the seven- and eight-year vets, they?d grown up in the ?80s and ?90s and that influenced their way of thinking and the way they acted towards each other,? Kluwe told Costas.? ?Now that I?m one of the seven- and eight-year vets, I look at the rookies coming in and it fills me with hope that these guys, they just, they don?t really care about what other people do with their lives because it doesn?t affect them.? They realize that other people should be free to live their own lives, you know, should be free to get married to who they want because at the end of the day, they?re allowed to get married to whoever they want.? So you know, I?m hopeful for the future and hopefully we can dispel this stereotype of the NFL being this macho, close-minded culture.?

When it happens, it will be a big deal for the player?s team ? for a little while.

?I think it?s something that will receive media attention for probably a good week and a half, two weeks, but it will die down because people will realize it doesn?t matter what your sexuality is when you?re out on the field on Sunday,? Kluwe said.? ?It matters can you play football?? Can you help us win football games?? And at the end of the day, it doesn?t matter what you?re sexuality is.? So hopefully we?ll be able to do our part to create a more welcoming culture so that someone feels comfortable in coming out and one day people will be able to be who they are.?

It?s a simple yet eloquent vision.? People will be able to be who they are.? Every sports team, company, and institution should aspire to that standard.

Nexus 4 pre-order page goes live early, UK launch due Oct. 30

Android Central

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has prematurely opened up its Nexus 4 pre-order page, laying bare all the details of the next Nexus smartphone from Google and LG. In addition to confirming already-leaked details, the CPW listing reveals the presence of "Android 4.2 Jelly Bean" an "amazing 360-degree camera" and Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The phone is listed with 8GB of storage, so there appears to be no sign of the 16GB model just yet.

Price-wise, the Nexus 4 is shown as available for free on Vodafone and O2 contracts starting at £31 per month. No SIM-free price is listed, unfortunately.

Interestingly, Carphone Warehouse says to "pre-order now for delivery on the 30th October," suggesting the Nexus 4 could launch at retail immediately after the Oct. 29 announcement event.

We'll bring you more details as we get them.

Tim Duncan's new business, 'BlackJack,' sure to be a winning hand

Written by Jeff Garcia on .

His NBA resume is one of countless accolades, which all but makes him a lock for the Basketball Hall of Fame. However,?San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan is now trying his hand at something new to add to his resume and that's becoming a business man.

For those who live in San Antonio, you may have seen a huge sign along Huebner Road with "Black Jack Speed Shop" emblazoned with huge black lettering with a red flame design. And in case you didn't know, that's the future site of Duncan's car and truck customization shop with a focus on wheels and tires, suspension, performance parts and accessories.

However, it shouldn't come to much of a surprise Duncan's business is in the automobile industry. He is an avid car fan and has soaked in huge automotive events during his offseason. So it goes without saying, this new venture will be right up his alley.

Duncan's friend and business associate at BlackJack, Jason Pena, invited Project Spurs to talk about the new business, take a tour of the facility, get a sneak-peek at Tim's new business venture, and get the scoop on what automotive and Spurs fans can expect once it opens.

But as Jason points out, BlackJack began small with a simple idea and a way for Duncan to share his passion for cars.

"This is Tim Duncan's business. We both shared the passion for cars ever since I've known him and it's been going on for a good many of years. We've always talked about how cool it would be, you know one day, if we had a shop, and we can do cars and do things the way we want to do them and so on and so forth," he said. "That conversation had loomed for five years. It came to a point where we sat down one evening and we were like 'Man, it would be really cool to do it,' and I said, 'Yeah, you want to do it, I'm ready to go,' and that's how it started."

From this idea, Duncan began laying the foundation for what BlackJack and what car fanatics can expect from the business. Of course to no ones surprise, Tim is setting a foundation of professionalism and excellence like he does on the court.

"The thing that people know is that he is ultra-competitive and passionate about his profession which is basketball. But what people don't know is that he is just as passionate and equally involved with the car hobby. He is a car guy," Jason said. "To share that type of passion in a respective field that I hold my passion in, we automatically connected."

But if you are thinking Duncan will be the "hands-off" type of owner, think again. Duncan is very involved at BlackJack, something Jason appreciates and highlights.

"Tim is heavily involved throughout all the process of this because, obviously, it's his business," he said. "There's a certain level of expectation for this particular business. His involvement has been from the ground level. Working with him throughout this process has just been an amazing experience. We collaborate even with the little details to what tile to put in the building and how should the building look and the collaboration of our logo which is going to become extremely familiar to the San Antonio area as the popularity and exposure grows about BlackJack."

Now if you haven't caught on to the true meaning and the origins of the name "BlackJack" came from, Jason reveals exactly where it came from which won't be a surprise to most Spurs fans.

"Everybody asks, 'How did you come up with Black Jack Speed Shop? What does that mean?' We tried to find a unique way to incorporate that this is Tim's business, but not put it in people's face that this is Tim's business. So we sat down with this unique idea, and he presented it to me and said, 'What do you think about this? BlackJack!'" Jason said. "I don't get it," he continued. "Like the game? The card game?"?Duncan then said, "Think about it. BlackJack. The card game. 21."

"So the correlation was subtle enough and still kind of edgy enough with the whole hot rod theme, that it works," he said.

Initially, the name "BlackJack" wasn't enough for Jason as he felt it needed more. He added "Speed Shop" to the title, and Duncan approved and thus was the birth of the name of Tim's business.

"The whole basis behind "speed shop" is, and one thing I want people to understand, even though the name is "BlackJack Speed Shop," we're not necessarily a speed shop," he said. "We're an automotive accessory business. The whole meaning behind speed shop, is kind of an homage to the early 50's and early 60's from where this industry started from. Long story short, the birth of hot rodding came about during that time."

"We are an accessory store for trucks, cars, we encompass everything. From lift-kits, from lowering to performance exhaust, performance brake upgrades, computer tuning. So everything is encompassed. Even just general maintenance, like your regular brake job," he said. "You can come to this facility and know you're going to get superb service and excellent quality."

As Jason mentioned, Duncan is heavily involved at BlackJack but it's not just the business side he will be involved with. According to Jason, Duncan won't be shy about rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty when it comes to the hands-on side of the business. It would certainly make for a great story to tell for a Spurs fan who brings their car to BlackJack only to see Timmy working on their vehicle.

"We've hand many discussions about that," he said. "Obviously, right now he's focused on the business at hand, the 2012-13 NBA season but Tim is truly a car guy. When he has more time available, like the summer, as dedicated as he is to his profession, he'll still be doing his workouts and everything else, but we've already talked about getting in there and having a project where he's going to get his hands dirty and he's going to get all the essentials of building a car from the ground up. That's how committed and passionate he is about this particular business.?Whether it be doing stuff in the front or going in the back and turning some wrenches."

Now that will be a sight to see. A four-time NBA champion getting under the hood and fixing cars but that is the type of person Duncan is. The same dedication he pours on the court for the Spurs, he will do the same at BlackJack.

"He's not intimidated by anything you put in front of him. He's compelled to excel and achieve anything or any goal that he puts in his mind. So as far as a 'mechanic' or 'gear head,' the words I like to use is he is truly a 'car guy.'"

And as much as BlackJack will be serving all of San Antonio's car needs, Jason says Duncan's business will well represented at various automotive outlets and magazines.

"We have one of our vehicles going out, this year, to the 2012 SEMA?Trade Show. We'll have our Nissan GTR out there. Represented and sponsored by 3M Auto Vinyl. We're going to have an article in Rides Magazine, which will be released in November."

Jason wants to stress that he, Tim Duncan and BlackJack's main thrust is to take care of all of San Antonio. San Antonio is the business' home base and San Antonio comes first.

"We're also about the community. We've already started a few things that are important to me and Tim. We sponsored the 2012 Reagan Cheer Clinic. We're doing a deal in November where we're sponsoring the San Antonio Camaro Club annual car show. We want the community to know this is a business but this is a place where everyone is welcomed to come in, to feel comfortable to come hang out and experience this business," he said.

As the interview continued, Jason revealed he is a Ford guy (Mustangs) and has a soft-spot for that line of vehicles and for German vehicles like Porsche, Audi or Volkswagen, but in case any of you were wondering what's Tim's favorite line of cars, Jason said Duncan is a classic car type guy.

"He's like a traditional muscle car kind of guy. I would venture to say a '68 Camaro is one of the fun cars he likes. More of the traditional "Americana" hot rods. If I was going to put my finger on a specific genre, that's would I would say."Moreover, ?Jason also went on to say Duncan really likes to work on any cars to push its horse power.

An interesting side note is that Duncan isn't the only car fanatic on the team. Jason said Stephen Jackson is also a "car guy" and has a nice collection of cars as well.?

BlackJack is going to be the premier destination for all car lovers throughout San Antonio. Duncan's business will bring nothing but the best, be an experience for everyone, give high-quality work, professionalism, and integrity in every aspect of the business. In other words, everything that people have come to love about Duncan on the basketball court, expect it duplicated at BlackJack.

Jason says BlackJack will having a soft date as far as a grand opening this December but a firm date for the grand opening will be in the new year, this coming January. So come on out when it opens and soak in the experience. I was told there will be festivities, BlackJack merchandise to purchase and so much more. Also, make sure to follow BlackJack on their Facebook page for all the latest updates.

I want to thank Jason Pena for taking time from his busy schedule and inviting me and Project Spurs for this interview and to get a behind-the-scenes look at Duncan's BlackJack. Be sure to come back to Project Spurs as well will be bringing you all the latest happenings from BlackJack.

Wi-Fi in a Nutshell
Wi-Fi wireless technology is 1 of the greatest technological advancements since the Internet. It offers mobility to computer systems and it is used in the office, at house and in community locations. A Wi-Fi enabled gadget such as a computer or intelligent phone can connect to the Internet when it is inside variety of a wireless network that is connected to the Web. It also enables communications straight from 1 pc to another with the involvement of an access point. Sadly, several problems can arise when computer systems transmit unsecured information to 1 an additional.

What is Cybercrime?

Cybercrime refers to unlawful actions that take place online. These consist of fraud, spam, drug trafficking, identity theft, sexual predators, computer viruses, cyber stalking, spyware and phishing schemes. Even though most people drop prey to these crimes at any 1 point, you can stay away from them by securing your pc.

Stopping Cybercrime

1. Wireless Equal Privateness (WEP)

Install WEP because it authenticates anybody who wants to access the wireless network and encrypts all visitors. There are two versions of WEP, the more powerful 128-bit and the older and weaker 40-little bit. The 128-bit edition might be more powerful but not all wireless devices on the community might support it. Even though WEP is not ideal and may be defeated with sophisticated software program, it can prevent unauthorised entrance doorway entry.

two. Choose a Strong WEP Password

Simply put, a weak password can effortlessly compromise WEP security. Its easy to select a powerful WEP password. All you have to do it stay away from utilizing sequences or repeated figures, personal information such as birthdays and telephone numbers as nicely as dictionary words in any language. Use long passwords with combinations of upper and lower case letters together with figures and other characters instead.

three. Install Firewall

Firewall software stops hackers from getting into your computer method so be certain to usually have this switched on. To access your firewall settings, go to Windows Control Panel and click on on Firewall.

4. Flip On Spam Blocker

Web companies often provide a spam-blocking function. Spam blockers stop undesirable messages such as fraudulent and phishing email messages from getting into your inbox. Keep the spam blocker on.

5. Turn Off Distant Administrator

Most wireless local area network routers arrive with a function that allows the community administrator to remotely configure the router. Keep this function switched off unless essential simply because leaving it enabled could render the community susceptible.

6. Use Virtual Private Community (VPN)

VPNs form a personal network that utilizes a public community to link remote website customers to 1 an additional. VPNs offer security as they use authenticated links to ensure that only authorised users can link to a community. In addition, they use encryption to make certain that other people can?t intercept and use the data that travels over the Web.

seven. Set up Anti-virus Software

Make sure you have adequate anti-virus software for your computer. Some of these software program include McAfee, Norton and Stopzilla. Installing anti-virus software is only the first stage in guarding your computer. It is essential to do a once a week scan and regularly update the software program.

eight. Monitor your Childrens Online Activities

New report assesses open access in biomedical research across Europe

The European Science Foundation's (ESF) membership organisation for all medical research councils in Europe, the European Medical Research Concils (EMRC) has today released an ESF-EMRC Science Policy Briefing (SPB) entitled 'Open Access in Biomedical Research' highlighting the need to accelerate the adoption of open access to research articles in the biomedical sciences across Europe.

Over the past few months, various reports and communications have been published on the topic of open

access. These include the Finch Group report on 18 June 2012, the Publishing and the Ecology of European Research (PEER) final report on 19 June 2012, the European Research Council (ERC) announcement of its new open access policy on 13 July 2012, and the European Commission's launch of a communication and recommendations to Member States 'Towards better access to scientific information' on 17 July 2012. On the same day, Science Europe reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the European Research and recognised open access as a priority area in which a common policy and action plan will be developed and implemented.

"The Internet and the technological developments that have arisen from it in recent years have the potential to radically change science publishing and maximise the impact of research" said Professor Pr Omling, ESF President and Science Europe Vice-President. He continued: "We envisage a full open access future one in which all published research generated by science researchers in the European Union is immediately available online and accessible by all."

The ESF-EMRC Science Policy Briefing entitled 'Open Access in Biomedical Research' was instigated to examine whether there are new opportunities for open access in biomedical research within Europe that will benefit European biomedical researchers and European society as a whole. The report provides three key recommendations for the adoption of open access policy:

1. There is a moral imperative for open access

Research papers should be made freely available to all to read, use and re-use, with appropriate acknowledgement, in order to maximise the value of biomedical research, build on the body of knowledge, accelerate the process of discovery and improve human health.

2. Individual agencies must work together to raise awareness of the moral imperative for open access

Agencies and organisations that fund and perform research, libraries, publishers and researchers must work collectively to raise awareness of the moral imperative for open access publishing. Enhanced efforts towards national, European and international partnerships are the basis for the successful achievement of open access to research outputs.

3. All research stakeholders should work together in order to support the extension of Europe PubMed Central into a Europe-wide PubMed Central

In order to facilitate discoveries and innovation in biomedical research, research stakeholders should collaborate to establish a Europe-wide repository in biomedicine as a partner site to the US equivalent PubMed Central. The recently rebranded Europe PubMed Central represents a valuable means to achieving this goal, provided that the diversity of European partner mandates and policies can be integrated.

Professor Josef Syka, Chair of the Science Policy Briefing and EMRC Core Group member, commented: "The turnover of information in biomedical sciences is very fast, so rapid delivery of information is needed at a fair price. Open access publishing has the potential to revolutionise the way in which biomedical scientists publish and access the latest results. The EMRC supports open access publishing as the ultimate goal to maximise the discoverability process, the access to and the re-use of biomedical research results in Europe."

As world helps shot Pakistani girl, Afghans ask "what about us?"

KABUL (Reuters) - The global attention bestowed on a Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban has sparked outcry amongst many Afghans dismayed by what they say is the unequal response to the plight of their women and children.

Malala Yousufzai, shot by Taliban gunmen for advocating girls' education, was flown from Pakistan to Britain to receive treatment after the attack this month which drew widespread condemnation and an international outpouring of support.

"Every day an Afghan girl is abused, raped, has acid thrown on her face and mutilated. Yet no one remembers or acknowledges these girls," Elay Ershad, who represents the nomadic Kuchi people in Afghan parliament, told Reuters.

Echoing concerns of other prominent Afghan women, Ershad said the government took no real interest in women's rights, instead using the issue for political gain and currying favor with Western backers, a claim Kabul has dismissed as untrue.

President Hamid Karzai has repeatedly condemned Yousufzai's shooting, even using it to address women's rights in his country: "The people of Afghanistan ... see this attempt not only against (Yousufzai) but also against all Afghan girls," he said last week.

The closest Karzai has come this year to condemning violence against women in Afghanistan, as seen on the scale he has done with Yousufzai, was in July when gunmen publicly executed a 22-year-old woman, named Najiba, for alleged adultery, which prompted an international outcry.

"If the president does not care about Afghan women in general, why does he suddenly care about Malala?" Ershad asked. "No one (here) ever seeks justice once the television cameras are turned off."

The United Arab Emirates provided the plane taking Yousufzai to Britain, while British officials said the Pakistani government was footing the bill for her lengthy treatment in Birmingham.

Karzai has told Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari that the attack was proof the two needed to tackle a common enemy, a move widely seen as an attempt to soothe ties between the neighbors amid bickering over Pakistani shelling across the countries' lawless border.

"WE BETTER UNDERSTAND MALALA'S SITUATION"

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and employment since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001, sparking the present NATO-led war, but Afghanistan remains one of the worst places on Earth to be a woman, despite billions of dollars in aid and pledges to better their lives.

There is now mounting concern that such freedoms will not be protected and may even be traded away as Kabul seeks a peace deal with the Taliban, as most foreign troops prepare to leave the country by the end of 2014.

"We understand Malala's situation better than anybody in the world, (yet) our government defends women's rights with empty slogans and actually does next to nothing," said Suraya Parlika, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and member of the upper house of parliament.

The popular, privately owned Tolo television highlighted the story of a policeman in eastern Ghazni province, called Zalmai, whose young son and daughter were shot dead in front of him by suspected Taliban members just days before Yousufzai's October 9 shooting in Pakistan's Swat valley.

"How can the Afghan government react so and condemn (the attack on) a Pakistani girl and ignore such an event like this?" Tolo quoted one of Zalmai's colleagues as saying this week, adding that officials had ignored requests to investigate.

Afghanistan's independent human rights commission says violence against women is increasing across the country as Karzai's government appears to backslide on women's rights.

The older brother of Mah Gul, a 20-year-old woman beheaded last week in western Herat province by her in-laws for refusing prostitution, said local officials initially took no interest in her murder.

"People get told off for slaughtering someone else's cow but we had to wait for her murder to be announced in the mosque before anything was done about it," 32-year-old taxi driver and Gul's brother Mohammad Nasir Akbari told Reuters.

Four people including Gul's husband and in-laws were arrested last week, officials said.

aerobraking impeller: Stress Management For Self-Improvement ...

Stress has always been a part of our daily lives. We often find ways to deal it with but can become unbearable when you?re tightly under its grip. The important part here is to take control of stress before it ends up controlling you ? which is to say that you will be making a lot of mistakes that will take quite a lot of time and effort to fix. This is where stress management comes in.

Why Get Rid Of Stress

We can never deny the fact that stress can be a big hindrance in everything you plan to do with your life. It can get in the way of business, career, or even with your family and friends. If you give in to the irritation and anger that is often the result of stress, you are bound to make wrong decisions and plenty of mistakes that will bring you down.

You can lose your job, do badly in a business deal, or even make enemies left and right when you let your stress control you. Learn to control stress and get rid of it every time it crops up for self-improvement.

Find The Source Of Your Stress

Knowing the source of your stress gives you plenty of options to counter it. If your stress stems from overwork, then take some time off from your busy schedule to relax. The home can also become a stressful environment, especially when it?s disorganized. If you think that the design of the interior is giving you problems, then take some time to rearrange the furniture around or add some home d?cor to make it comfortable to look at. Once you are able to determine the problem then you can take the necessary steps to correct it.

Learn To Relax Once In A While

Everyone would agree that work, or the demands of work, is mostly the cause of stress. If you think that you have that wild look in your eyes every time your boss asks you to do something, then you better ask for a vacation leave to relax yourself outside your work area before it leads you into trouble.

Take some time off from your busy schedule and visit the local spa. Pamper yourself by indulging in a full-body massage or get an aromatherapy session going on to help you relax. You can always take a vacation if you really want to get the thoughts of work out of your system, but a massage will do just fine if you can?t afford to be absent from it.

Find The Child Within You

Kids are known to be stress-free. Even if you scold them or force them to eat vegetables, you will never see them suffer from stress. The reason here is with their mindset to enjoy life as they see fit. You can take your cue from them and enjoy life more.

Find your inner child and just play. You can grab your Playstation out of the cabinet and bring out the games you usually play during your free time. Another idea is to listen to your favorite music or read some comics on the Internet. You can even play online games if you like just to get your mind off your work.

Keep in mind that the gist of stress management is not the methods you take for getting stress out of your system. The idea here is to learn how to divert your mind from the problems that causes stress to give yourself time to relax and face the problem with a clear mind.

Lack of sleep tied to teen sports injuries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Adolescent athletes who slept eight or more hours each night were 68 percent less likely to be injured than athletes who regularly slept less, according to an abstract presented Oct. 21, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans.

For the abstract, "Lack of Sleep is Associated with Increased Risk of Injury in Adolescent Athletes," researchers asked middle and high school athletes (grades 7 to 12) enrolled at the Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City, Calif., to answer questions about the number of sports they played and the time they committed to athletics (at school and through other programs), whether they used a private coach, whether they participated in strength training, how much sleep they got on average each night, and how much they subjectively enjoyed their athletic participation. Seventy percent of the student athletes (112 out of 160 students; 54 males and 58 females; mean age 15) completed the survey, conducted in conjunction with Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Researchers then reviewed those students' school records pertaining to reported athletic injuries.

Hours of sleep per night was significantly associated with a decreased likelihood of injury, according to the study results. In addition, the higher the grade level of the athlete, the greater the likelihood of injury -- 2.3 times greater for each additional grade in school. Gender, weeks of participating in sports per year, hours of participation per week, number of sports, strength training, private coaching and subjective assessments of "having fun in sports" were not significantly associated with injury.

"While other studies have shown that lack of sleep can affect cognitive skills and fine motor skills, nobody has really looked at this subject in terms of the adolescent athletic population," said study author Matthew Milewski, MD.

"When we started this study, we thought the amount of sports played, year-round play, and increased specialization in sports would be much more important for injury risk," said Dr. Milewski. Instead, "what we found is that the two most important facts were hours of sleep and grade in school."

The advanced age risk may reflect a cumulative risk for injury after playing three or four years at the high school level, Milewski said, and older athletes are bigger, faster and stronger.

Why aren't insects human-size?

The Ant-Man cometh. ?

Director Edgar Wright, known for movies such as "Shaun of the Dead," announced earlier this week he would be making a movie about Ant-Man, a comic superhero who can shrink to the size of an ant and communicate with his formic brethren, according to the news site Grantland. If it's anything like the comic, it will also feature ants as big as humans, which got us thinking: Could ants be as big as people? And why aren't insects bigger than they are?

The short answer is, researchers don't know exactly, although there are several hypotheses as to why insects and other arthropods don't get bigger, said insect physiologist Jon Harrison, at Arizona State University in Tempe.

The first hypothesis is that insects' exoskeletons may not be strong enough to allow them to get much bigger ? that they'd have to become impossibly thick. Harrison learned this theory as an established fact during his training, but little experimental evidence to support the idea exists, he said. The only study to look at this question found that larger arthropods don't have thicker exoskeletons, he said. "So there's no direct evidence for this," he said.

Too tasty
Because exoskeletons are rigid, insects need to molt as they grow, shedding the old skin and growing a new one. Scientists have suggested this vulnerable time puts a ceiling on size: Larger animals, particularly those without protective skeletons, would make for more attractive meals to a predator. "The bigger you get, the more of a tasty vulnerable package you are," goes the thinking, Harrison said.

A related theory suggests being larger makes you a more attractive meal, whether molting or not. One study found that the size of ancient flies declined as birds evolved, suggesting smaller creatures were better able to avoid hungry raptors and pass on their genes.

Another possibility: Insects have open circulatory systems, where blood and bodily fluids aren't bound up in vessels, as is the case with most vertebrates. This makes it more difficult to move blood throughout a large body, as circulation would be hampered by gravity, which pulls blood downward.

Not enough oxgyen
Perhaps the most plausible hypothesis, and one that Harrison has studied extensively, is the role played by oxygen. Insects "breathe" via tiny tubes called trachea, which passively transport oxygen from the atmosphere to bodily cells. Once insects reach a certain size, the theory goes, the insect will require more oxygen than can be shuttled through its trachea.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Sun's heavenly halo lights up the Arctic

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Is this heaven? No, it's Greenland ? lit up by a display of refracted sunlight. 'Tis the season for stunning atmospheric effects, and not just in the Arctic.

    2. Kilauea lava lake hits record height
    3. Rare frog sports thumb-spikes for sex and combat
    4. Dome-headed dinos battled with their heads

Support for this theory comes from the fact that about 300 million years ago, many insects were much larger than they are today. There were, for example, dragonflies the size of hawks, with wingspans of about 6 feet (1.8 meters), and ants the size of hummingbirds.? At this time, the oxygen content in the atmosphere was about 35 percent, versus 21 percent today.

Harrison's work has shown that almost all insects get smaller if you rear them in low oxygen conditions; many of them get bigger when you give them more oxygen. Certain species can get about 20 percent bigger in a single generation when given more oxygen, he said.

Bulky insects also seem to need more trachea. "If you extrapolate that out with a much bigger insect, perhaps there'd be nothing left but trachea," he said. And there's only so much room ? an animal needs room for other organs, muscles and the like.

But that hasn't been proven, and scientists don't understand exactly why insects aren't bigger, or more broadly, the biological basis for controlling body size. There are many more questions than answers, he said.

Okay, but ants as big as humans? "I'm not willing to say it couldn't happen," he said.

Luxembourg royals tie knot in religious ceremony

LUXEMBOURG (AP) ? Under a canopy of soldiers' drawn swords as church bells tolled, Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg and Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy emerged smiling Saturday from the tiny duchy's Notre Dame Cathedral after wrapping up a two-day wedding gala with a religious ceremony.

With a celebratory fireworks show still to come, onlookers and well-wishers lined the super-scrubbed streets near the cathedral and roared with joy as the newlyweds looked down from a red velvet-covered palace balcony, and haltingly ? but deeply ? kissed for the crowd.

The church wedding of Prince Guillaume ? the 30-year-old heir to the throne and Luxembourg's grand duke-to-be ? and the Belgian countess drew top-drawer guest list. It came a day after a civil ceremony at Luxembourg City Hall.

The bearded groom and his 28-year-old blonde bride were trailed by a procession of well-known royals, including Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, Prince Naruhito of Japan, and Britain's Prince Edward ? Queen Elizabeth's youngest child ? and his wife, Sophie.

For the wedding banquet attended by 800 people, Bocuse d'Or-winning chef Lea Linster ? herself from Luxembourg ? whipped up a buffet medley including Riesling-marinated pork and veal pate, lobster in gelee consomme, and sea bass in salted crust and thyme stuffing; dessert included Madeleine cakes, choux a la creme pastries, and creme brulee.

Stephanie plans to renounce her Belgian citizenship in order to ? one day ? become Luxembourg's grand duchess. The tiny country wedged between France, Belgium and Germany is an important financial center and continues to prosper despite Europe's economic trouble.

Stephanie wore a lace Elie Saab dress with a 5-meter-long wedding train during the ceremony, which was conducted in a mixture of French, German and Luxembourgish. It began with a minute's silence to honor her late mother, Countess Alix de Lannoy.

The nuptials gave tiny Luxembourg ? a founding member of the predecessor of the European Union ? a rare moment in the international media spotlight. With a population of just over 500,000, the trilingual duchy punches above its weight: Besides being an important financial center, it's home to the world's largest steel manufacturer and it boasts the second-highest gross domestic product per capita in the world, more than $80,000.

Luxembourg began as a Roman fortress. It has, at one time or another, fallen under the control of Spain, France and Austria. In 1839, it gained its independence from the Netherlands, but lost more than half its territory to Belgium. Germany overran Luxembourg twice in the 20th century despite its protests of neutrality.

The current grand duke, Henri, who is 57, is popular. People can greet him on the street without bowing down before him. His 31-year marriage to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa appears to be very happy.

The newlyweds seem to be happy too: In public appearances, including at the London Olympics, they have appeared besotted with each other.

After watching the ceremony on a big-screen on a public square near the cathedral, royal-gazing fans sensed the joy and historical importance.

"It was a really big moment ? a really beautiful moment," said Claudine Als, clutching a glass of Champagne, seemingly awaiting a toast. "It is a historic day for Luxembourg, the country shines throughout the world."
