Tony Blair says he ducked fight with UK media

LONDON (AP) ? Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that he couldn't stand up to Britain's media tycoons while in power, telling an official media ethics inquiry that doing so could have dragged his administration into a political quagmire.

Blair's testimony on Monday, briefly interrupted by a heckler who burst into the courtroom to call him a war criminal, shed light on the canny media strategy used to create the "New Labour" image that repackaged his party as more mainstream and business friendly, bringing it back to power after 18 years in opposition.

Blair, who was premier from 1997 to 2007, enjoyed strong press support in his early years, including backing from media mogul Rupert Murdoch's influential newspapers. But he found himself isolated near the end of his decade in power due in large part to his unpopular decision to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The greying ex-prime minister said he long had concerns about what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media but had to tread carefully where press barons were concerned.

"I took a strategic decision to manage these people, not confront them," he told Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is leading the inquiry. "I didn't say that I feared them ... (but) had you decided to confront them, everything would have been pushed to the side. It would have been a huge battle with no guarantee of winning."

Leveson's inquiry was set up following revelations of phone hacking at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid, a scandal which has rocked the British establishment and raised questions about whether top politicians helped shield Murdoch ? and the media in general ? from official scrutiny.

Blair's time at the top has come under particular scrutiny because of the unlikely ? and mutually beneficial ? alliance the media-savvy prime minister forged between his left-wing Labour Party and Murdoch's News Corp. ? a company whose holdings include the populist The Sun newspaper and the right-wing Fox News network.

Blair became so friendly with Murdoch that he was chosen to be the godfather to one of Murdoch's children. The Blair government's relationship with Murdoch has since been described by several former colleagues as having been too close for comfort.

The former prime minister made no apologies for courting Murdoch, saying he was just one of several media tycoons who could make life difficult if they weren't happy with a position he was taking.

He denied doing any kind of deal with Murdoch, "either express or implied" ? although he acknowledged calling the Australian-American tycoon ahead of elections to make sure that Labour could count on News Corp.'s support.

Blair's testimony was interrupted when a heckler burst in through a secure corridor behind Leveson, shouting: "This man should be arrested for war crimes!" before being removed by security. British media reported that the heckler, who identified himself as filmmaker David Lawley Wakelin, had previously heckled Blair over the 2003 invasion of Iraq at a televised question and answer session.

Such incidents ? a testament to the divisiveness of Blair's decision to go to war in Iraq ? are routine. Last week, a handful of protesters yelling out "warmonger" interrupted Blair's speech at Colby College in Maine.

Blair, wearing a navy suit and sporting a tan, watched impassively. Leveson, looking ruffled, said he would investigate how the man managed to sneak in to the restricted area.

Wakelin ? who was released without charge ? later told London radio that he took advantage of an unguarded door in the maze-like Royal Courts of Justice, where the inquiry is being held.

Blair spent a considerable amount of time challenging the reputation his lieutenants built up for bullying, manipulation, and "spin" in his decade in office.

Still, he acknowledged that politics and media had become "far more rude and brutal ? and in a sense crude ? in its interaction."

Blair's appearance kicked off an important week at the judge-led inquiry. Current ministers, including Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Education Minister Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May, are due to testify in the coming days.

Prime Minister David Cameron, a Conservative, is also expected to testify before Leveson, whose inquiry was set up last year after it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figure and crime victims.

The scandal has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest or resignation of dozens of journalists, media executives, political operatives and police, prison and military officials. It has also exposed a pattern of wrongdoing across the British press, from bribery to blackmail.

The investigation continues: As Blair was testifying, police said they had arrested a 42-year-old woman who was not identified on suspicion of money laundering offenses linked to the hacking scandal. She was later released on bail.

Monti wants Italian football halted for 2-3 years

updated 11:22 a.m. ET May 29, 2012

ROME (AP) -Premier Mario Monti suggested Tuesday that Italian football should be suspended for two to three years after the latest match-fixing scandal rocked the national team and tarnished the image of the domestic game yet again just a week before the start of the European Championship.

Dawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests - including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri - to bring the total number of suspects arrested in the match-fixing probe to about 50 since last year. Many more have been placed under investigation.

"Football should be stopped for two to three years," Monti said on Tuesday in a powerful message to Italy's football authorities on the need to clean up the game. "It is not a proposal by the government but a question I am asking as someone who was passionate when football was still football."

Monti made the comments while standing beside the prime minister of Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine starting June 8.

"I'm not making a proposal, and even less is it a proposal that comes from the government, but it's a desire that sometimes I feel inside me: that it would really benefit the maturity of us Italian citizens if this game was completely suspended for two to three years," he said.

He also ruled out the use of public money to bail out football teams in difficulty.

Police swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday as part of the operation and Italy defender Domenico Criscito was left out of the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation.

Antonio Conte, who coached Juventus to the Serie A title this term, was also officially notified that he is under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while in charge of Siena in 2010-2011.

Apart from those arrested Monday, three people have been placed under house arrest and two others are to present themselves to authorities. Five of the arrests were made in Hungary.

Numerous others have had their houses searched, including Chievo Verona striker Sergio Pellissier as well as Conte and Criscito.

The investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. It has resulted in former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni being banned from football for three and a half years, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.

Serie A clubs Atalanta, Novara and Siena were among the 22 Italian teams notified at the beginning of this month that they are being investigated by sports authorities.

Prosecutors in Cremona have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years.

Italy has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal - known as Calciopoli - that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and lengthy bans for club and refereeing officials.

The Italian national team reacted in the best possible way, winning the World Cup later that year.

Great-grandma: Ready to 'lose' my life protesting

Nan Wigmore, 75, brought a walker and a sign to Chicago to protest at the NATO summit.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

CHICAGO -- Nan Wigmore brought her walker and packed her sign, ?Grateful Great Grandmas Circle The Wagons, Support Occupy,? and rode on a bus for some three days, sleeping in the same clothes, to make it to the NATO protests in Chicago.

The 75-year-old from Portland, Ore., says she couldn't imagine being anywhere else despite the discomfort of her journey.?

?My feelings are too deep to keep me in my old comfortable place, so I had to learn some new things and that means to move out of my comfort zone,? Wigmore said as she sipped a hot chocolate late Friday after a few hundred protesters met at a downtown Chicago plaza in the lead-up to the two-day summit that begins Sunday.

She was one of hundreds of demonstrators who got free bus rides from National Nurses United, a coalition of nurses unions that held a rally earlier Friday in Chicago calling for a transaction tax on Wall Street.?But Wigmore stands out from the crowd with her sign and walker.

A few protesters at the plaza greeted her and shared laughs amid the thunder of helicopters clattering overhead and people playing drums.?

After one man told her she was ?amazing? and a ?force to be reckoned with,? she later said: ?I?m a woman walking with a sign, period ? I?m following the heroics, the courage of generations back really, you know, we?re just continuing what was going on.?

Wigmore, who was an anti-nuclear activist, said she got involved in the Occupy movement as it picked up steam back home.

A great-grandmother to ?less than 15,? grandmother to 12 and mother of five, she said her youngest child called her ?hero? but there were others in her family who had differing points of view.

US veterans to return medals as NATO protesters march
Scenes from Chicago protests surrounding NATO summit
Attacks on police, Obama HQ were planned, prosecutors say?

For her, there was nothing more important than being in Chicago protesting against NATO, calling for money to go to health and education initiatives and not to war. She said she was ?very serious? about her protesting and did not intend to stop.

?As a matter of fact, if I lose my life in the process of all this, it?s the best way I would let myself go,? she said.

And to those who may wonder why she is out on the streets protesting, she has a question of her own in turn: ?I?d say, ?Are you certain that everything is the way you want it??"

APNewsBreak: 22 states join campaign finance fight

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia are backing Montana in its fight to prevent the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision from being used to strike down state laws restricting corporate campaign spending.

The states led by New York are asking the high court to preserve Montana's state-level regulations on corporate political expenditures, according to a copy of a brief written by New York's attorney general's office and obtained by The Associated Press. The brief will be publicly released Monday.

The Supreme Court is being asked to reverse a state court's decision to uphold the Montana law. Virginia-based American Tradition Partnership is asking the nation's high court to rule without a hearing because the group says the state law conflicts directly with the Citizens United decision that removed the federal ban on corporate campaign spending.

The Supreme Court has blocked the Montana law until it can look at the case.

The Montana case has prompted critics to hope the court will reverse itself on the controversial Citizens United ruling. The 22 states and D.C. say the Montana law is sharply different from the federal issues in the Citizens United case, so the ruling shouldn't apply to Montana's or other state laws regulating corporate campaign spending.

But the states also said they would support a Supreme Court decision to reconsider portions of the Citizens United ruling either in a future case or in the Montana case, if the justices decide to take it on.

Legal observers say don't count on the Supreme Court reconsidering its decision.

"It is highly unlikely that the Court would reverse its decision in Citizens United," said law professor Richard L. Hasen of the University of California-Irvine.

At best, the court would listen to arguments and might agree a clarification is needed to allow the Montana law to stand. But even that is a long shot, Hasen said.

Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock argues that political corruption in the Copper King era led to the state ban on corporate campaign spending. A clarification of Citizens United is needed to make clear that states can block certain political spending in the interest of limiting corruption, he said.

American Tradition Partnership argues that the state bans unfairly restrict the ability of corporations to engage in the political process that also affects them.

Bullock wrote in a brief to be released Monday that the state does not "ban" corporate political speech, rather, it regulates that speech by requiring the formation of political action committees.

The Democrat, who is running for governor, said the upstart political corporations hoping to take advantage of unfettered spending are merely "an anonymous conduit of unaccountable campaign spending."

Montana and the other states are asking the court to either let the Montana Supreme Court decision stand or to hold a full hearing. They argue laws like the one in Montana that bans political spending straight from corporate treasuries are needed to prevent corruption.

The other states, many with their own type of restrictions hanging in the balance, argue local restrictions are far different than the federal ban the court decided unconstitutionally restricted free speech. Further, state elections are at much greater risk than federal elections of being dominated by corporate money, requiring tailored regulation, the states' court filing says.

"The federal law struck down in Citizens United applied only to elections for President and U.S. Congress," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wrote on behalf of the states. "By contrast, Montana's law applies to a wide range of state and local offices, including judgeships and law enforcement positions such as sheriff and county prosecutor."

The joining states, unlike Montana, ask the court to go further and reconsider core findings in Citizens United. They argue, for instance, it was wrong for the court to say unlimited independent expenditures rarely cause corruption or the appearance of corruption.

And other critics of the Citizens United decision who believe the court was wrong to grant corporations constitutional rights, have intervened and asked the court to reverse itself.

"There is a growing bipartisan consensus that Citizens United needs to be overturned, and Montana is leading the way," said Peter Schurman, spokesman for a group called Free Speech For People. "The Supreme Court has an opportunity to revisit Citizens United here. That is important because there is evidence everywhere that unlimited spending in our elections creates both corruption and the appearance for corruption."

On Friday, Montana's case was given a boost when U.S. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-D-R.I., signed on in support. The senators argue evidence following the Citizens United decision, where millions in unregulated money has poured into presidential elections, shows that large independent expenditures can lead to corruption.

The states who filed the brief in support of Montana are New York, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The Top Ten Questions To Ask A Contractor Before You Invite Them ...

Guest Post from Michael at First Choice Power Washing in Lexington KY

3. Do You Carry Workers Compensation Insurance?

Make sure they carry workers compensation insurance. It protects you from liability if a worker is injured while on your property. Be aware that if the contractor doesn?t carry workers? compensation coverage, you could be liable for any injuries suffered by the contractor or any of his employees on your property. If the contractor is a one-man operation, he can be exempt from having to carry workers? compensation insurance. Ask him to show you his certificate of exemption from workers? compensation. This is very risky for you thought. If he shows up with a helper and the helper gets hurt, with no workers? compensation insurance, you may have to pay the medical bills. If the uninsured contractor is sloppy about verifying his sub-contractors workers compensation insurance and the sub-contractor gets hurt, again you may have to pay the medical bills. What are the risks? Basically if anyone gets hurt while working on your home or business and they aren?t covered by having workers compensation insurance coverage, you could be responsible, by law, for their medical treatments, which can be as simple as a few thousand dollars for a minor injury to hundreds or thousands for a major one. Bottom line ? It is always safer to deal with a fully insured contractor.

Kyocera teases bone conduction audio technology for mobile phones at CTIA

Can you hear me now? It's a common phrase in the mobile industry, but if Kyocera has its way, the saying could quickly become a thing of the past, thanks to bone conduction technology that it plans to integrate into future handsets. Rather than operating with a traditional earpiece, we were told the display itself vibrates to create sound waves. The end result is an aural experience that can be perceived with your facial tissues and bones, and it's said to dramatically improves perceived audio quality within noisy environments.

Bone conduction technology was initially created for those with hearing difficulty, and while Kyocera isn't the first to reveal an implementation within mobile phones (a distinction that belongs to KDDI), the technology is Kyocera's own. During our brief hands-on demo, we were rather impressed by the noticeable difference created by tissue conduction in comparison to a traditional handset -- this applies to both quiet and noisy environments. In case you're curious, no, the vibrations aren't jarring, and yes, we'd genuinely like to see the technology take to the mainstream.

Using Safflower as an Alternative Hair Loss Treatment

Baldness is not the worst kind of suffering at all. But while there are other inconceivably fatal diseases, baldness has a certain social stain that also has fatal effects to the ego?which is quite similar to having a fatal condition.

This is the reason we should not make fun of follicularly challenged people. These people either secretly or openly go to lengths to attend to their hair and scalp needs.

Added to the recent information drive the FDA pursued on the subject of product side effects, most patients turn to natural means to solve their balding problems.

Fortunately, there are notable options that posed great efficacy against baldness?the reason alternative treatments remain popular to our bald/balding folks. A common alternative hair loss treatment is safflower.

A member of the Compositae family, safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is native to India, Iran, North America, and the Far East.

It bears flowers with brilliant orange-red colors. Safflower seeds are the main source of its essential oil.

Safflower oil is derived through mechanical and chemical processes. Through mechanical extraction, the essential nutrients of the oil remain whereas through the chemical process, the oil is refined by certain chemicals, thus removing most of the essential nutrients of the oil.

Safflower oil comes in two varieties: the polyunsaturated type that is high in linoleic acid and the monounsaturated type, which is rich in oleic acid. Linoleic and oleic acid are both essential fatty acids, which are ideal components in both a conventional and alternative hair loss treatment.

Nutritionally, safflower oil is similar to olive oil, which is another effective alternative hair loss treatment.

The seeds of safflower contain 30% oil, 20% protein, and 35% crude fiber. All these compounds are known to be very beneficial for the hair.

Safflower seeds are also a rich source of minerals (zinc, copper, magnesium, and iron); vitamins (thiamin and beta-carotene); and tocopherols (alpha, beta, and gamma) which are antioxidants.

For centuries, safflower oil has been used to treat hair loss, regulate cholesterol levels, and replenish essential fatty acid supply.

Safflower oil serves as a good vasodilator, which means it can dilate vessels to allow entry of a better supply of nutrients for the hair follicles and thus creating a good scalp environment for hair regrowth.

Bondi Hardware, Restaurant & Bar Review | Gourmantic

Make a reservation at Bondi Hardware, and you?ll see your name written in chalk on the table when you arrive. This is just one element that carries the theme of a restaurant and bar that was a hardware store for nearly thirty years.

Opened in mid November 2011, Bondi Hardware is a hop away from the main drag of the beach and Campbell Parade, up along Hall Street. Step through the glass doors, and you?re in another world of rustic design, exposed bricks, bare floors industrial lighting and a central communal table under a skylight with draping fernery.

Owners Ben Carroll and Hamish Watts have gone through great measures to create a breakfast, lunch and dinner venue built along the concept of the original hardware store, and one that is welcoming and accessible. They?ve engaged no interior designers but a creative builder who translated their vision into a space that sees their characters behind it.

?We wanted the venue to be accessible,? Ben says. ?Our patrons are mainly locals and regulars, so we keep it fresh. This is the third menu in 5 months. We change it often to maintain diversity.?

Bondi Hardware

With extensive hospitality experience, including working together the last five years, their passion for the job is evident in the regular patronage and the number of tables being turned on a busy weeknight.

The bar

The bar is a cool spot to sit and watch the bartenders at work. You?ll even find hooks on which to hang a handbag. The cocktail list has a summery theme starting with the light, fruity and floral such as The Geisha with Hendrick?s Gin and strawberries, and moving to heavier rum-based drinks such as the? Old Cuban and Dark and Stormy with Pampero rum. The cocktail menu carries the ?hardware? theme with diagrams showing the shape of the drinking vessel beside the drink.

L to R: Green Grass, Lychee and Elderflower Martini

The Lychee Elderflower Martini ($16) made with St-Germain Elderflower liqueur, vodka muddled lychees and lime is well-balanced and not overly sweet, making it easy to drink as an ap?ritif.

Green Grass ($16) lives up to its name with Zubrowka Bison Grass vodka mixed with pear syrup, lime and green apple juice. You get the green apple taste on the front palate followed by the grassy flavour of the Polish vodka.

Keep an eye for Loco Coco ($15), a whole coconut filed with Pampero Blanco and a splash of coconut syrup. And if you?re after something more fun, try the Elderflower Ice Pops ($6), served with soda on the side.

The wine list skips around the world from the antipodes to Argentina, Italy and France, with many available by the glass. Beer and cider are also on offer on tap and in the bottle.

The food menu is diverse and built around the concept of share plates. You?ll find wood-fired pizzas, the popular sliders, NY dogs, sizeable salads, dips, mezze plates and snacks for groups. But where the kitchen really shines is under Head Chef Justin Walshe, ex La Grillade in Crows Nest in the assortment of share plates.

Different cuisines are represented offering the diner a global choice with 3 to 4 dishes recommended between two people. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are catered for on request.

Bondi Hardware
Kingfish ceviche

The Kingfish ceviche with avocado and toasted baguette ($18) is a burst of fresh flavours with sizeable chunks of fish in lime juice with avocado and diced tomatoes.? Overall, a great choice for a first dish to whet the appetite. It goes down well with a glass of 2010 Viticoltori Pinot Grigio from Italy.

Bondi Hardware
Jamaican curried goat

Spicy and very tender, the Jamaican curried goat ($17) is topped with yoghurt served with a side of steamed rice. This dish is an absolute delight with just the right amount of curry not to overpower the flavour of the meat.

Bondi Hardware
Forest mushrooms on polenta

White wine and garlic saut?ed forest mushrooms on soft polenta ($15) is the type of dish that makes you want to recreate at home to impress your dinner guests. The polenta is soft and creamy with an incredibly smooth texture. The earthy flavour of the mushrooms topped with generous shavings of cheese permeates the polenta making this dish a winner.

Keeping a watchful eye on what other diners have ordered, all dishes looked appetising particularly the sliders in a row of four, the Chermoula lamb rump chops and the nicoise of ocean trout.

Bondi Hardware
Nutella and banana pizza

Desserts change often and at the time of visit, the only option was a Nutella and banana pizza. Generous lashings of Nutella on a light pizza base, a crispy banana and chocolate topping, a sprinkling of mint leaves and walnuts to cut through the sweetness, make a fun dessert that can be shared among four persons.

Much like the new generation of Bondi eateries we?ve reviewed recently (the Anchor Bar and the Bucket List) Bondi Hardware grips you from the first visit with its relaxed vibe, unpretentious attitude, vibrant food and drink menu. With its share plates concept, the dishes don?t take long before they are served, making it an option for a quick meal if you?re in a hurry. They are usually served at once which makes it a little difficult to juggle plates on an intimate table for two. Funky tunes contribute to the ambience but not so loud as you can?t have a conversation. Service is attentive and Bondi-friendly, with the complement of staff looking at ease in their roles no matter how busy it is during the night.

When the evening crowd disperses and you?re kicking back against the comfortable banquette sipping on a glass of Arido Malbec, you?ll already be making plans for your return.
