WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) ? With Indiana hemorrhaging revenue during the Great Recession, Gov. Mitch Daniels targeted higher education to help fill the gap ? including nearly $30 million in state cuts at Purdue University.
On Thursday, trustees there unanimously approved him as the school's 12th president. Students, faculty members and legislators wondered how the governor would transition to a new job with such starkly different duties ? particularly considering he still has six months left in his old one.
Daniels said it will involve a lot of listening. The former White House budget director and Eli Lilly executive has a Princeton bachelor's degree and Georgetown law degree but virtually no experience working in academia.
"I don't even know what I don't know yet. All I know is there's a lot I don't know," he told about 100 students at an afternoon gathering on campus.
Besides segueing from budget hawk to higher-ed advocate, the change for Daniels also will be extreme in the world of politics. The outspoken conservative was once considered such a rising star that many Republicans encouraged him to seek the presidency ? or at least make himself available as a potential running mate or Cabinet choice for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.
He said his appointment means he won't be involved in partisan politics after making one last out-of-state appearance this weekend.
"No campaigning, no commenting about anybody's campaigning ? in the state or out state or anywhere else ? no fundraising, nothing. I won't be a delegate to the national convention," he said.
Daniels, 63, will take office in January once his second term as governor expires.
That sudden withdrawal from the political spotlight is a sharp change for Daniels, who has written op-ed pieces, spoken on Republican causes to gatherings of conservatives, been a fixture on Sunday morning news shows and delivered the GOP's response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address this year.
The stance is one of necessity. University presidents need to be able to unite, not divide, said Robert Bontempo, who teaches executive education at the Columbia Business School in New York.
"You can't give people orders and tell them what to do," he said. "You have to lead by consensus, because they have lifetime jobs."
Bontempo said politicians tend to make the transition to university leadership more successfully than private sector executives. He cited Bob Kerrey, a former governor and two-term senator from Nebraska who is running for the Senate again after 10 years as president of the New School for Social Research in New York City.
Since 2009, Daniels has ordered more than $150 million in cuts to public education ? about one-fifth of that to Purdue. Adam Hoover, a 2008 Purdue graduate who is organizing a public protest over Daniels' selection, said he thinks Daniels is hostile to the cause.
"It's disturbing that one man could both cut the budget of a public university and control the exact impact of those cuts," Hoover said in an email to The Associated Press.
The university also came under fire from state lawmakers over its tuition increases at the height of the recession. Purdue's in-state tuition rates have risen by as much as 62 percent since 2004, according to figures provided by the university.
As governor, Daniels approved a new right to work law that angered unions and signed off on a law that would cut most public funding to Planned Parenthood because it provides abortions. He also pushed through the nation's largest school voucher program, drawing fire from critics who said using taxpayer money so students could to attend private schools violated the constitutional separation of church and state.
"I don't think he has a proven track record in terms of being able to get the job done and doing things the right way," said Tim Neuhaus, 28, of Baltimore, Md., who graduated from Purdue in 2010 with a bachelor of science degree and works as a project engineer for a commercial construction company.
Mindy Anderson, 33, who is seeking a doctorate in pharmacy and teaches veterinary classes at Purdue, said she thought Daniels was a great choice because of his leadership skills. She said she wasn't concerned that he had cut higher education spending in the past.
"He didn't do it irresponsibly. I think he did his homework and got the information he needed and did what he needed for the financial health of the state," she said.
Daniels won't be in a position to decide on allocations to Purdue during the remainder of his term as governor because the Legislature does not reconvene until January.
But Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City and a member of the budget-writing Ways and Means Committee, questioned whether Purdue would be treated more favorably than other state-supported universities when the Republican-dominated General Assembly is making appropriations.
"What do the folks in the inner sanctum of Indiana University or Ball State University have to say? Do they think they're going to be treated the same way?" Pelath said. "It would be foolish not to look down the road and consider the possible implications."
Daniels will have to win over faculty and students who question whether having him appointed by a board he largely appointed poses a conflict of interest. Some also are leery of his lack of academic experience and his reputation for shaking up the status quo.
Morris Levy, a biological sciences professor who just completed a term as University Senate chairman on June 1, said some faculty worried that Daniels might lower the school's academic standards. He pointed to the governor's support of the Legislature's recent decision to limit the number of college credits state university students need to earn a degree.
"The intrusion of politics into the academy is something everyone ought to be wary of," Levy said. "But he does bring enormous skills to the job we haven't previously had."
Purdue officials said they anticipated some negative reaction to Daniels' selection but said support was overwhelmingly in favor of his appointment to succeed France Cordova, who will step down in July after five years at Purdue's helm.
"He's a visionary. He's a strategist. He's an innovator. But most of all, he's a doer," said Trustees President Keith Karch.

Surgery 'Reanimates' smile in patients with facial paralysis
ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? A surgical technique using a muscle flap from the thigh restores facial motion -- and the ability to smile -- in patients with facial nerve paralysis resulting from neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), reports a study in this month's special "Operative Neurosurgery" supplement to Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Kalpesh T. Vakharia and colleagues of Harvard Medical School report good results with "smile reanimation" in NF2 patients with facial nerve paralysis. They hope their study will help remind doctors to include facial rehabilitation in their treatment plan for patients with NF2.
Good Results with Gracilis Muscle Flap for 'Smile Reanimation' Neurofibromatosis type 2 is an inherited condition that causes patients to develop noncancerous tumors. Tumors typically occur along the auditory nerve, with the potential to cause hearing loss. When the facial nerve is affected -- by either tumors or surgery to remove them -- facial paralysis commonly results.
In addition to functional problems (such as problems with speech and eating or closing the eye), facial paralysis is a disfiguring condition that takes away facial expressiveness -- including the ability to smile. "Despite the significant impact of facial paralysis on these patients, little attention has been given to the treatment of this in patients with NF2," according to Dr Vakharia and coauthors.
They report their experience with a muscle and nerve transfer technique for restoring facial motion in five patients with NF2 and facial paralysis. All patients had severe paralysis of one side of the face, with drooping and lack of motion at the corner of the mouth (oral commissure) on the paralyzed side. The patients were three men and two women, aged 12 to 50 years; most had facial paralysis as a complication of previous surgery.
To restore facial motion, surgeons transplanted a small flap of muscle from the inner thigh -- the gracilis muscle -- to the face. The gracilis muscle flap, including associated nerve and blood vessels, was used to replace the damaged area causing facial paralysis. Patients received physical therapy during the recovery period after surgery.
The gracilis flap procedure was successful in restoring the patients' ability to smile. Sophisticated geometrical measurements found a significant increase in the ability to lift the oral commissure on the paralyzed side. Just a few millimeters meant the difference between no movement and a natural-looking smile.
"When questioned about their impressions of their faces, the patients uniformly expressed a dramatic improvement in their ability to express happiness nonverbally," the researchers write. Patients also had significant improvement in scores on a quality of life questionnaire.
Some patients said that the procedure restored the ability to smile spontaneously. That's a potentially important advantage, because while other procedures can restore facial motion, the patient has to make a conscious effort to smile.
Although the study is small, it shows that the gracilis muscle flap is an effective treatment for the facial paralysis in patients with NF2, Dr Vakharia and coauthors believe. They remind all professionals involved in the care of patients with this "devastating complication" to incorporate some type of facial rehabilitation therapy into their treatment plan.

The Definitive Layman's Guide to Diagnosing and Fixing a Slow ...
There are multitudes of web pages written on identifying, locating, and removing viruses, spyware, and adware.? This will be very much a 10,000 foot view of this issue since viruses are ever-changing and answers to specific? virus-related problems can be found, in detail, elsewhere.
Prevention
Prevention is the best way to not have to deal with this problem.? If you are reading this, I assume you already have a virus so I will keep this short.? Know what types of sites you are visiting!? If you frequent known, low risk sites and searches you will have fewer problems.? If you are constantly surfing the seedy underbelly of the web, you will need to learn to recognize risky sites or have some sort of in-browser type virus protection.
Get a good virus protection program. There are many free ones.? My favorites are AVG, Avast, and Microsoft Security Essentials. You only need one.? Norton, MacAfee, and Kapersky are some of the more popular paid virus protection programs. I have two issues with these:
- They tend to take control of the root of your system, blocking you from performing tasks on your computer as a means of preventing you from harming the system yourself.? This is not necessarily a bad thing.? If you are new to computing, this can help keep you safe.
- They tend to take up lots of resources (memory, disk space, etc).? Sometimes the virus protection program can slow your computer more than a virus would.
If you believe you already have a virus.
1) Start your computer in Safe Mode
- Reboot your computer and as it is booting up slowly tap the F8 key at the top of your computer (some models use the delete key), about once every 3 seconds or so.?? You should see a black screen that with several boot options on it.?
- Look for ?Safe Mode with Networking?.?
- Highlight it by using the up and down arrows, then hit enter. This will load only the essential programs needed to make your computer run (and connect to the internet).?? The screen may look strange since some drivers are not running.? Safe mode should also be showing in the corners of your screen.
- Once at the desktop, look in your task manager to see what programs are running.? Does anything look strange? Stop any unnecessary programs.
2. Download, Install, and Run HijackThis
Hijackthis from TrendMicro will help remove files that have ?hijacked? your computer.? These files can prevent your virus software from doing its job effectively.? If you are able to get to the internet, download, install, and run HijackThis.? If you are not able to get to the internet, it may be time to call a professional.
- Download and install HijackThis
- Run the program
- Look at each line. Look for the names of companies that you recognize.? Companies like Microsoft, Yahoo, HP, or Norton.? These files are usually safe
- Look at any lines that do not contain these company names.? Do you recognize the program that is referenced in the line?
- If you find a line that doesn?t have a familiar program name in it, copy everything after the last ?/?.? This will be the actual file name, usually ending in ?.exe? (executable).
- Paste that into a web search at Google or Bing or your favorite search engine.
- Read about the file. Is it safe?? Often it is easy to realize that a file is bad because the top search results will contain words like ?virus? or ?how to remove?.
- Once you are certain that the file is bad, put a checkmark in the box next to it in HijackThis
- Once you have all of the bad lines checked, click ?Fix Checked?
- If you are not sure, do another scan and this time save a log file.? This file can be uploaded to many virus forums and the kind folks there will help you out.
3. Download, Install and Run Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an excellent program for finding and removing those really pesky programs that can keep your virus software from doing its job.
- Download and install Malwarebytes (There is a fee version)
- Update (just like with your virus program, an out of date malware database is of no use).
- Run the program
- Follow the prompts
- When the scan is finished (This could take several minutes).
- Click ?See Results?. You should see a list of possible malware. Check these to see that Malwarebytes hasn?t misidentified a useful program for a bad one
- Click ?Remove Selected?
4. Launch and update your Virus Program.
Always update the program before scanning.? New viruses appear all of the time.? A scan with an outdated virus database is not a complete scan.
- Scan your computer.?
- Reboot the computer
- Scan the computer again
5. Download, Install, and Run a Spyware Program
Again, there are several good spyware programs out there.? Many are free.? My personal favorite at the time of this writing is Spybot.?
One note about Spybot, it also comes with an optional add-on called TeaTimer that helps to protect you from future infections.? As good a program as this is, I find that it can often take up valuable resources while running in the background.? When I install Spybot, I decline the additional install of TeaTimer.
Follow the same procedures as above when running your spyware scan. Reboot, go into Safe mode, update, scan, reboot, and scan again.
6.?Download, Install, and Run an Adware Program
Adware is not as common a problem as it used to be.? I think many advertisers have found that this tends to alienate potential customers; therefore they don?t do it as often anymore.? Also, most Adware is caught by a good spyware program such as Spybot.? When I used to run a lot of adware scan, I would use Adaware.? But I haven?t had to use it on years.
7. System Restore
I know people who swear by this method but I am always a little leery of losing data, it?s never happened but that?s my thoughts, so I use this as a last resort.?
Windows contains a System Restore feature that allows you to rollback you computer to the status it was in before any tragic problems.? To find System Restore
- Click the Start button
- Click ?All Programs?
- Click on the ?Accessories? folder
- Click on the ?System Tools? folder
- Click ?System Restore?
System Restore will ask you if you want to restore your computer to an earlier date.? Follow the instructions. Microsoft has made this extremely simple.? Pick a date that you know is prior to your infection and allow Windows to restore your computer to that date.? The computer will restart during this process.?
8. Really tough stuff
The procedures above tend to get things back in order most of the time.? However,? if you are still having troubles there is a possibility that you have a rootkit, a program which reloads itself every time you boot, and if your virus and spyware scans cannot seem to find and root out (pun intended) the small file that allows this to happen, then you will continue to experience virus symptoms. The solution to this is often more drastic in nature and more risky and I will not go into it here. This is when you get out of the ?layman? category and start becoming an expert. If you are looking for more information on these issues, begin by looking for the following softwares. A word of caution, though, before using them read everything you can about them. Read forums and articles from other people who have used them and proceed carefully.?

Madagascar 3 Wins Weekend, Rock of Ages Flops
Madagascar 3 roared to its second consecutive box office victory this weekend, easily outperforming a couple of disappointing newcomers: Adam Sandler's embarrassing That's My Boy and Tom Cruise's long-haired turn in Rock of Ages.
The animated triquel fell 41 percent from its opening weekend, but still came close to doubling up the second top performer, Prometheus, which dropped 60 percent from a week ago.
Rock of Ages, meanwhile, reportedly cost over $65 million to produce, yet earned just over $15 million. It's not a great sign for star Julianne Hough, whose career hasn't exactly taken off since leaving Dancing with the Stars.

Woot! Arsenio Hall returning to late-night TV
NEW YORK (AP) ? Arsenio Hall is returning to TV's late-night scene, where he flourished with a talk show two decades ago.
CBS Television Distribution says it is developing a syndicated nightly talk show with the 57-year-old actor and comedian. The company said Monday that the show is set to premiere in fall 2013.
Hall is best known for hosting the Emmy Award-winning "Arsenio Hall Show," which ran from 1989 to 1994. That show's place in pop-culture history was clinched in 1992 when then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton appeared and played "Heartbreak Hotel" on the saxophone.
Hall was featured in the 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy "Coming to America" and was a regular on the CBS series "Martial Law" in the late 1990s.
Recently, he won the latest edition of NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rodney King, the black motorist whose 1991 videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers was the touchstone for one of the most destructive race riots in the nation's history, died Sunday. He was 47.
King's fianc? called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to report that she found him at the bottom of the swimming pool at their home in Rialto, Calif., police Lt. Dean Hardin said.
Officers arrived to find King in the water and unresponsive, with no signs of foul play. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m, Hardin said.
The San Bernardino County coroner will perform an autopsy within 48 hours.
The 1992 riots, which were set off by the acquittals of the officers who beat King, lasted three days and left 55 people dead, more than 2,000 injured and swaths of Los Angeles on fire. At the height of the violence, King pleaded on television: "Can we all get along?"
King was stopped for speeding on a darkened street on March 3, 1991. Four Los Angeles police officers hit him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns.
A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.
It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.
Violence erupted immediately, starting in South Los Angeles.
Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.
During the riots, a white truck driver named Reginald Denny was pulled by several black men from his cab and beaten almost to death. He required surgery to repair his shattered skull, reset his jaw and put one eye back into its socket.
The police chief, Daryl Gates, came under intense criticism from city officials who said officers were slow to respond to the riots. He was forced to retire. Gates died of cancer in 2010.
In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."
In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.
"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he says. "This part of my life is the easy part now

Burn victim hit with alleged attacker's towing fee

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A woman who was set on fire at a gas station says she's being victimized again, this time by hundreds of dollars in car towing fees levied by the state of Florida.
Naomie Breton, 34, has to pay $340 for having her car towed from the gas station where police say the father of her son set her on fire Monday, television station WPBF of Palm Beach, Fla., reported.
"I think it's a disgrace," Breton told WPBF. "It's not like I had a choice of where my car went to. I was on fire. So therefore, my car is here now and I have to pay you to get what's mine back? That's not right."
Adding insult to injury, Breton also is on the hook for the $363 towing bill -- plus the $25-a-day late fee -- owed by the man accused of attacking her, Roosevelt Mondesir, WPBF reported.
Both his and her names are on the car. Mondesir, 52, is behind bars at the Palm Beach County Jail, being held without bail on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
Boynton Beach police said they responded to a 7-Eleven at 7088 Lawrence Road and found Breton with severe burns to her face and body, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by NBCMiami.com. Parts of her shirt were still on fire on the ground, it said.
Store surveillance video showed the woman running into the convenience store, screaming as she tried to shut the front door. She could be heard telling a man to leave her alone, and then a man pulls her out of the store. Moments later she ran by outside ablaze.
Breton had driven to the gas station in her Mercedes to meet Mondesir for their "time-sharing exchange" of their 4-year-old son, for whom they share custody, the affidavit said. ?As she waited at the gas pumps in her car, Mondesir arrived in a Jaguar and Breton realized her son was not in the car, the affidavit said. She wanted to get back in her car to leave, but he got out of his car with a red gas can and began dousing her body and car with gasoline, according to the report.
Breton was burned over 12 percent of her body and was released Tuesday from Delray Medical Center.?Breton told the Palm Beach Post?from her Lantana,?Fla., home that?she wouldn't have been attacked if?Palm Beach County Judge Thomas Barkdyll had granted her a restraining order in late May.
?They said there wasn?t enough physical evidence,??the single mother of three?told the Post.
She told the Post that she and Mondesir had been together for eight years but that he became verbally abusive and violent after she did not give him a definite answer to a Valentine?s Day marriage proposal.
