Sprint's StarStar Me service makes you "memorable" - Know Your Cell

Sprint announced Monday that it will start offering customers a new service called StarStar Me for an extra $2.99 per month. Now, before you scoff at that branding, let's just take a moment to think about how much more awful it could have been. Really, guys, Sprint could have opted for the pound sign here (go ahead, put it together, we'll wait)...?

But back to the point. This new service is supposed to simplify the process of dishing out your digits. Because, you know, it's really difficult and time consuming giving someone your number. "Imagine meeting someone and instead of telling them 10 hard-to-remember digits, giving them your own memorable mobile number, like **SARAH (**72724) or **CHLOE (**24563)," Sprint noted in a release.

That's...ummm, nice and all, but who the hell bothers remembering anybody's digits anymore, anyway? Haven't we all pretty much grown accustomed to quickly punching 'em into a stranger's?smartphone and simply saving it? Or maybe using an app that does the grunt work instead??

Here's how the company sums it up:

"StarStar Me allows consumers to choose a name, nickname or unique word in place of their mobile phone number ? then people can call them on their mobile phone by simply tapping the star key twice on the phone?s keypad, followed by the name, nickname, or unique word they chose, using keypad letters or characters. StarStar Me also offers users the ability to automatically respond to calls with a custom text message when they're busy, as well as a unique way to share links to their blog, website or social media accounts."

So, let's just make sure we're clear here. Sprint is now offering a totally new and complicated way to call up your pals. Because now you have to push the star button twice, followed by a bunch of random digits instead of just typing in the first few letters of their name to pull it up quickly from your phone, or just heading straight to your address book, or using voice-activation, or hell, I dunno, speed dial.
